Award-winning journalist and longtime ESPN NFL analyst Chris Mortensen has died at the age of 72.

Mortensen's 32-year tenure at ESPN was marked by exceptional reporting, groundbreaking scoops, and an unwavering commitment to the sport. He became a trusted insider, providing insightful analysis and insider information on "Sunday NFL Countdown," the NFL Draft, and "SportsCenter."

Prior to joining ESPN in 1991, Mortensen had an illustrious career at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, where he earned the 1987 George Polk Award for his in-depth investigation of amateur sports. He also covered the NFL for The National.

In 2016, Mortensen announced he had been diagnosed with Stage 4 throat cancer. Despite undergoing treatment, he continued to work tirelessly, confirming the retirement of Peyton Manning and providing comprehensive coverage of the NFL.

Mortensen announced his retirement from ESPN in 2023 to prioritize his health, family, and faith. He is survived by his wife, Micki, and son, Alex.

"Mort was universally beloved as a supportive and hard-working teammate," said ESPN president Jimmy Pitaro. "His extraordinary skill and passion for the NFL were unmatched, and he will be deeply missed by colleagues and fans."

Fellow ESPN reporter Adam Schefter paid tribute to Mortensen, calling him "one of the greatest reporters in sports history and an even better man."

The NFL world expressed its condolences, with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell commending Mortensen for his "dedication to the game and exceptional reporting."
